The cloud is somebody's else computer. And somebody has some rules...
Can you provide a few more details:
What they write is " This deactivation was due to a Box Terms of Service violation. Specifically related to Section 10: Acceptable Use Policy."
I do use more than 100tb of data, I think they realize this deal with me is not a good one
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I think I will stop uploading and cancel my 60 day trial.
Not idea where my data to go as the current policy of dropbox next door
would be good to know which of the rules in section 10 you didnât comply with.
you could fix or change your setup and continue using the service.
Yeah, please can you be more precise? Were you using crypt?
+1 to that. Section 10 of the TOS reads:
- ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
You agree you will not, nor will you encourage others or assist others to, harm the Services or use the Services to harm others. For example, you must not use the Services to harm, threaten, or harass another person, organization or Box and/or to build a similar service or website. You must not: (a) damage, disable, overburden, or impair the Service (or any network connected to the Services); (b) resell or redistribute the Services or any part of it; (c) use any unauthorized means to modify, reroute, or gain access to the Services or attempt to carry out these activities; (d) use any automated process or service (such as a bot, a spider, or periodic caching of information stored by Box) to access or use the Services; (e) use the Services beyond the features allocation and amounts provided in that Service or in violation of our fair use policy; (f) use the Services to, and/or cause Box to, violate any law or distribute any malware or malicious Content; (g) use the Box Service to communicate any message or material that is defamatory, harassing, libelous, threatening, or obscene; (h) use the Box Service in a way that violates or infringes upon the intellectual property rights or the privacy or publicity rights of any person or entity; (i) distribute, post, share information or Content illegally or without permission; (j) use the Box Service to disseminate or promote terrorism or terrorist activities; or (k) use the Box Service to disseminate material that may infringe upon legally protected social rights and freedoms of a person(s) (collectively, âhuman rightsâ) and/or as defined by domestic and public international laws and/or other legal norms. As part of our efforts to protect the Service, protect our customers, or to stop you from breaching these Terms we retain the right to block or otherwise prevent delivery of any type of file, email or other communication to or from the Services.
We also reserve the right to deactivate, change and/or require you to change your Box user ID and any custom or vanity URLs, custom links, or vanity domains you may obtain through the Services. You also agree that if you learn of any unauthorized or unacceptable use of any account, Content or the Service, you will promptly contact Box Support and take all reasonable steps to cooperate with Box and assist in the termination of such use.
It has exactly ZERO mentions of X or Y TBs being considered basis for kicking people out, and as their Business plans are explicitly Unlimited in terms of storage, I don't think they would have kicked @wloot just because of that (@wloot, you have a business account, right?)
I am very, VERY interested on hearing more about this. So far what I consider most probable is that @wloot may have stored something problematic without encryption and it got detected and Box had to act.
They didn't give me any more details
Can you post that mail?
you could try to ask to get more details - also to make it right next time...
did you upload your stuff crypted? - if not and if it might have been copyright related, this could also help to get to the reason for you being kicked.
but if you don't want to share those details, we will never know... ![]()
@wloot Please reply to our questions ![]()
Did you use crypt or did you upload plain data?
Did you upload with an insane amount of --transfers and/or from multiple locations at the same time?
First of all, many thanks to you for coming out and reporting this. It's vitally important information for everyone that's using (or planning to use) Box.
OTOH we all really need more info. I understand you don't want to spend any more time on this, but if you could please PM me your Box account email address, and if possible a copy of the termination email they sent you, I will contact them directly and ask for more info, and let everyone here know what their answer is.
Thanks in advance, @wloot, and again much appreciated.
This post is what got me to give box.com a try. Although I did not myself contact support to ask them about this, I figured if some other used asked, and was told 300tb was not a problem, then my 140tb shouldn't be a problem either.
But to contact support is also a gamble, as they can behave randomly, so I didn't wish to contact them if not needed, but...
@wloot 's plight has me worried and confused.
Would box.com have preferred to be contacted about this? For example I am on a business plan, I'd gladly double my cost and go up to an enterprise plan, if they convinced me that it would be acceptable, but of course if they're going to terminate me without warning either way, why experiment with them at double the fee?
So, yes, count me also interested, were your files crypt'd? Were you sharing your account? etc etc. I'm worried that even though I am not sharing my account they will think that I am because I am using two different remote servers for migration because that gives me more speed (and box.com is a tad slow for me)
I'm curious, how did you contact box.com specifically to ask if they would be okay with such a large amount of data?
Did you choose live chat, or email, or phone?
I'm asking because I'm considering asking them myself (even though I already paid and I already set it up, I could still ask.)

b. Bandwidth
To help prevent excessive usage by any one user, Box may limit user bandwidth if it exceeds the thresholds described below.
Box monitors two different types of bandwidth:
Download Bandwidth for Shared Links: Files downloaded from an open access shared link (applies to the owner of the file).
10GB per user per month for Individual plans
2TB per user per month for Box Business plans
Download/upload Ingress/Egress Bandwidth: Files uploaded and downloaded (applies to the user who uploads and/or downloads the file).
1TB per user per month for both Box Business and Individual plans
I wonder if this is a main reason to upgrade from box business to box business plus? jro was apparently using box business plus, despite it having the same 50,000 api limit per month. I am at the moment only on box business, I'd happily pay for box business plus, if someone on their support staff told me it would be okay. But since I'm expecting them to randomly terminate me, I wanted to be on the cheapest plan I could to start with.
Also:
under
Section 2. Entitlement Compliance
- Creating a single user account that multiple users share.
I'm perfectly happy to never share. But I am personally using multiple computers/serves myself, and I do worry they might misconstrue that as sharing.
My account settings page does show though
Account Type: Business
Storage Used
6.0 TB of Unlimited
Bandwidth Used
0 B of Unlimited
Max File Size
5.0 GB
Which is mildly reassuring, but only mildly.
I guess Box will also check for newly registered users/groups and their HDD usage (even crypted, but chunker has filenames rclone included; so maybe a good idea to remove it)
Posted in multiple threads - have my account with 25tb - uploaded another 19tb on a different user with tpslimit 12 and for this (business account) doesnât seem to have much impact (not currently uploading large data)
I got this same email 30 min ago
my 3 user business account went from 20 to 47tb in a few weeks, but I figured tpslimit would avoid this issue
we shall see
