"Unlimited" alternatives to Google Drive, what are the options?

Correct :slight_smile: Beyond 10TB.

This was super helpful since there is a dearth of guidance.

However, I think you should consider flipping your crypt and compress (gzip) so that gzip is the outermost remote. Otherwise, it is trying to compress encrypted files which is folly.

(unless I am getting this wrong but I don't think I am)

Blomp seems to be indeed a project of AiNET.
CEO is Deepak Jain, who seemingly worked as contractor for the NSA in the past.
In 2012 they seemingly owned three data-centers in the US and also carry patents in the field of datacenter-backup-strategies.

This is at least not a completely no-name company even tho one clearly sees that they have zero experience when dealing with B2C. But the actual storage-backend should be ok with this experience and they for sure also can calculate to not go bankrupt. Under 50$ for 50TB is pretty good and worth a try i think.

So more like this?

[blomp-swift]
type = swift
user = email
key = pass
auth = https://authenticate.ain.net 6
tenant = storage
auth_version = 2
endpoint_type = public
leave_parts_on_error = true
chunk_size = 1P
no_chunk = false

[blomp-alias]
type = alias
remote = blomp-swift:email

[blomp-chunker]
type = chunker
remote = blomp-alias:
chunk_size = 5242879K
name_format = *.#####
start_from = 1
hash_type = md5
meta_format = simplejson
fail_hard = false
transactions = norename

[blomp-crypt]
type = crypt
remote = blomp-chunker:
filename_encryption = standard
directory_name_encryption = true
password = <hashed encrypted pass 1>
password2 = <hashed encrypted pass 2>
no_data_encryption = false

[blomp-gzip]
type = compress
remote = blomp-crypt:
level = 9

Can't really take them serious after seeing this vid btw xD

Hmm. those racks shown my data already owns. so where y'all keeping yours then?

I'm eyeing blomp. Been doing solutions here for about a decade, from Google to Dropbox. Now the latter has also gotten ensh*ttified so moved locally but would be nice to have a backup.

Signed up and am testing a bit with the free 20gbs. Is a chunker still required or does a new rclone version come with built in support? I've been trying to make sense of the issues in the massive backlog and there seems to be some mentioning of these things but unclear if there is a fix in a current build.

Likely getting the 100TB plan. Creating a crypt and doing auto backups regularly. Some files bigger than 5GB.

do chunker -> crypt -> alias -> swift

doing so what do i use to mount and run from? to copy files to blomp, to get files bigger then 5g to upload

There is a BETA build that includes support beyond the 5GB (Without extra steps), I'm just not sure how/when/if that will go into the stable release.

Interesting, thanks.

I'm a bit skeptical to making the commitment when files will be tampered (split) Just seems like an unnecessary complication I'd like to avoid for a backup. IIUC the files are not merged in the remote but need to be if/when downloading. Clearly this would create some issues with listing and remote work, not to mention hashes not working. Hmmm...

Do you know where I can find the beta you mention?

https://beta.rclone.org/branch/fix-swift-blomp/

Thanks! Not a lot of easy to find info on this, the beta and plans for blomp compatibility. Or maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. Anyway really appreciate the answer and this thread!

For those interested. I tested a bit. The beta linked seems to handle chunks automatically. When uploading files bigger than 5GB it'll store the file in the location but it has 0 bytes. A folder is created - .file-segments - and it will hold a folder that has the same name as the file. In it - another folder with what I believe is metadata and in that respectively files split by 5GB that are called ######## (00000000, 00000001 etc).

The upload was a bit unsteady with uneven speeds. Wonder if it has to do with the chunking. I was getting max 30ish MiB/s on a 1Gbps line and it dropped a times.

Overall doesn't feel like a very solid solution. Not sure if there are technical limitations to why 5GB+ can't be uploaded but I believe Blomp should really solve that on their end to make this a serious option.

Haven't tried mounting and downloading. Don't know if it would work well. But for backups maybe it's ok...

Yes I agree BLOMP needs some improvement. But it is right now the far cheapest option out there.

I get hubiC vibes. That stuff was horrible and I’m somewhat feeling like all OpenStack solutions have limitations. With hubiC I firstly was able to upload all my files, but when retrieving it was incredibly slow and unusable.

Anyway, the AIN.net company is only situated in the US. The videos that I could find didn’t seem very professional either. The UI is extremely bad but when you use rclone you’ll probably don’t care.

Anyway, I think other storage providers are more reliable but come at a price. We don’t have the big Google Drive / Dropbox luxury anymore.

O and wrt Chunking, I believe max filesize is 5GB. IDK why. Maybe an openstack limitation(?). As long as their storage is reliable I wouldn’t worry too much about the rclone chunking.

Just had an email from Jottacloud, they now offer a "Pro" version priced as follows.

  • 10 TB for 299 NOK/month
  • 20 TB for 599 NOK/month
  • 30 TB for 899 NOK/month
  • 50 TB for 1499 NOK/month

300 NOK is about €25.

Any further updates on pcloud? Saw they have some kind of 50% off deal now:
https://landing.pcloud.com/nl/KingsDay2024

Maybe only for dutch people though. Wondering if it's any good / worth.

I took the plunge and got a lifetime 2TB when it was on sale.

It appears to be very fast, at least from Germany. like gigabit transfer rates consistently. iDrive e2 is nowhere near that consistent, it maxes out at 500Mbps or so and even that is not consistent.

I am looking forward to seeing how it goes and if it keeps up these speeds.

Wow that's interesting. It's half the price of iDrive e2 for the long run. Is it only for existing customers? It's not on their website yet.

Is Jottacloud fast (if storing less than 5TB currently)?

How? €25 per month per 10TB is about $320 per year.

So slightly more expensive than iDrive where you can get 10TB for $300 per year.

It does appear you must be logged in. The URL is Log in to Jottacloud but it requires log-in.
