Transferred max count incorrect whilst using --check-first

What is the problem you are having with rclone?

When using rclone with the --check-first flag, my understanding is that it calculates the changes before transferring, so it should display an accurate number of total files to be transferred. When actually running, it does the checks first, but the max Transferred count increases whilst it transfers files, so it sits around 100% transferred the entire time, and has an ETA of 0s.

Eg.

Transferred: 43.039 GiB / 43.048 GiB, 100%, 52.698 MiB/s, ETA 0s
Errors: 1 (retrying may help)
Checks: 59611 / 59611, 100%, Listed 150237
Transferred: 2252 / 2254, 100%
Elapsed time: 44m54.9s
Transferred: 44.264 GiB / 44.264 GiB, 100%, 51.313 MiB/s, ETA 0s
Errors: 1 (retrying may help)
Checks: 59611 / 59611, 100%, Listed 150237
Transferred: 2320 / 2321, 100%
Elapsed time: 45m39.9s

This makes it very difficult to gauge progress, and provides an inaccurate ETA.

Run the command 'rclone version' and share the full output of the command.

rclone v1.75.0

  • os/version: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro 25H2 25H2 (64 bit)
  • os/kernel: 10.0.26200.9457 (x86_64)
  • os/type: windows

Which cloud storage system are you using? (eg Google Drive)

Hetzner storage box (SFTP)

The command you were trying to run (eg rclone copy /tmp remote:tmp)

rclone sync 'F:\Photography' 'hetzner:Photography' --backup-dir 'hetzner:Trash/Photography/<timestamp>' --create-empty-src-dirs --check-first --track-renames --transfers 6 --checkers 3 --progress --stats 5s --log-level INFO --log-file 'Y:\logs\backup-<timestamp>.log'

Please run 'rclone config redacted' and share the full output. If you get command not found, please make sure to update rclone.

welcome to the forum,

afiak, --check-first decides which files need to be transferred, then does the transfer.
does not keep a running sum total of the sizes of all files.

maybe that would explain why the following does not change
Checks: 59611 / 59611, 100%,

might test --check-first --order-by=size
