I think we can set --vfs-read-chunk-size-limit -1 , which means infinite growth. This should work for all file sizes. When many chunks are read in a row, the chance is high that the next chunk we be used complete.

Yes that makes sense.

I will open a Issue where we can discuss new default values.

Great I think this most excellent feature has shown its value and now needs to be on by default.
