Rclone x Jellyfin 10.11 (Scanning & Trickplay constantly regenerating | Takes forever +24hrs)

I've been running Jellyfin with media stored on iDrive e2 (S3-compatible object

storage) via rclone FUSE mount for a while now, and I keep running into issues
with Jellyfin treating all my media as "changed" and regenerating trickplay images
from scratch. With 20TB+ of media this takes 3+ days and leaves the server in a
degraded state.

I wanted to post here and see if others have found working solutions, because I've
been going back and forth between two configurations and both have serious drawbacks.

## Setup

- Media: ~20TB on iDrive e2 (S3-compatible)
- Mounted via rclone FUSE at /home/debian/media
- Jellyfin running in Docker, reads from that mount
- Trickplay images stored locally (~12GB)
- Real-time library monitoring: disabled

ORIGINAL PROBLEM (NOW FIXED)

Every time I rebooted the server, Jellyfin regenerated ALL trickplay images (5.4GB) even though they existed on local disk. This took ~3-4 days to complete each time.

Root cause identified: The --no-modtime flag was causing rclone to present different modtimes on every mount, making Jellyfin think all files had changed.

Successful fix: Removed --no-modtime flag, kept only --use-server-modtime. Trickplay now survives reboots correctly.

NEW PROBLEM (CURRENT ISSUE)

After fixing the reboot issue, Jellyfin scheduled tasks now take HOURS to complete EVERY SINGLE TIME they run, even without any reboots or actual file changes:

Previous behavior (before fix):

  • Initial trickplay generation: 3-4 days (expected)
  • Subsequent scheduled "Generate Trickplay" runs: Seconds (skipped already-processed files)
  • Library scans after initial: Seconds (skipped unchanged files)

Current behavior (after fix):

  • Initial trickplay generation: 3-4 days (expected)
  • Subsequent scheduled "Generate Trickplay" runs: HOURS (re-processes everything)
  • Library scans: ~1 hour (re-scans everything)
  • This happens on EVERY scheduled run, not just after reboots

The problem: Jellyfin appears to think ALL files are new/modified on every check, even though:

  • No files have actually changed
  • Server hasn't rebooted
  • Nothing has been written to the mount

What I Need

A rclone mount configuration where:

  1. File modtimes are stable and consistent across reboots
  2. Jellyfin's scheduled library scans complete quickly (not treating everything
    as changed)
  3. Jellyfin’s scheduled trickplay generations does not regenerate previously created trickplay images.

I want to keep Jellyfin's scheduled library scans and trickplay generation running
on their normal schedule — I just don't want them to treat existing, unchanged
files as modified after a reboot.

Questions for the Community

  • Has anyone found a rclone flag combination that gives truly stable modtimes
    across reboots with an S3 backend?
  • Are there specific iDrive e2 backend settings that help?
  • Has anyone solved this differently — e.g., a post-mount script, a different
    caching strategy, or configuring Jellyfin to be less sensitive to modtime changes?
  • Would rclone serve nfs or serve webdav behave differently for modtime reporting?

do you really need that?
i disable such features with rclone mount. also no deep scanning of files for thumbnails, etc..
scanning libraries is very fast, not alot of data needs to be downloaded.
re-scanning is also very fast.

do not use modtime flags, let rclone use default flag values.

i never got the error message from idrive.
looks like a short-term issue with idrive server, which might be the source of most of your issues.

i recommend creating a small library for testing. use the minmal number of flags.
and must use a debug log.
note: --checkers does nothing a mount.

S3-compatible backends like iDrive e2 don't store sub-second timestamps, and the mtime that rclone surfaces can shift slightly between remounts or cache refreshes. Jellyfin detects this as a file change and re-queues everything for scanning.

A few specific mount flags worth trying:

--use-server-modtime: tells rclone to use the mtime from the remote as-is, without any local adjustment. This makes the timestamps stable across remounts.

--vfs-cache-mode full combined with --no-checksum: reduces the metadata calls rclone makes on every stat, which can stop Jellyfin from seeing fluctuating sizes or timestamps.

--attr-timeout 1h: caches filesystem attributes (including mtime) for 1 hour rather than re-fetching them constantly. This is the most impactful flag for Jellyfin specifically.

Also worth checking: is your rclone mount persistent across reboots? If the mount dies and remounts, Jellyfin will always re-scan everything because the filesystem appears fresh. A systemd unit with RemainAfterExit or a docker restart policy helps here.
