You didn’t wipe it, you just overmounted it.
Type fusermount -u -z ~/
and it should all go back to normal, or reboot.
OMG thank you that would have saved me a lot of time and a mini-heart attack! Sadly, I panicked and did a restore from a backup as I just assumed I’d blown my home directory away and was too scared to reboot thinking I’d never get my machine back.

[edited to say I just tried running fusermount but don’t seem to have it. Does it install by default with the FUSE package?]
fusermount is part of the fuse package on my ubuntu 16.04 machine.
