I went back to look at it again and found that my config changes were not being updated for some reason. So I found the rclone.conf file and manually edited it. And what do you know, it actually works.
On the down side, it means I can’t actually add any more remotes, until I figure the problem with the config file.
This might be https://github.com/ncw/rclone/issues/682 - don’t do rclone config
if rclone is running.

That is a hard problem! The canonical solution would be to use an agent to store the value. For instance you could run gpg-agent then script the decryption of a pgp file with the password in. You could do similar things with ssh-agent or gnome-keyring maybe…
Something like this might help also: https://github.com/ncw/rclone/issues/737 depending on what you are trying to acheive

none of the mega open source sync clients do actual syncing... therefore it would be nice to have mega support in...
