Mounted SMB Drive Does Not Function as Local

#### What is the problem you are having with rclone?

I am trying to use rclone to map an SMB share to a ubuntu box to look like a local drive on Windows 10. The command runs and the drive maps (viewable in Windows Explorer) but applications that are looking for a local drive don't see it.

#### Run the command 'rclone version' and share the full output of the command.

PS C:\rclone> ./rclone version
rclone v1.69.0

  • os/version: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro 23H2 23H2 (64 bit)
  • os/kernel: 10.0.22631.4751 (x86_64)
  • os/type: windows
  • os/arch: amd64
  • go/version: go1.23.4
  • go/linking: static
  • go/tags: cmount
    PS C:\rclone>

**Are you on the latest version of rclone? **

Yes. Downloaded and installed yesterday. Also installed winfsp-2.0.23075, per documentation.

#### Which cloud storage system are you using? (eg Google Drive)

N/A. Local network share only from Ubuntu server.

#### The command you were trying to run (eg rclone copy /tmp remote:tmp)

./rclone mount server01:/Data D:

#### Please run 'rclone config redacted' and share the full output. If you get command not found, please make sure to update rclone.

PS C:\rclone> ./rclone config redacted
[server01]
type = smb
host = XXX
user = XXX
pass = XXX
### Double check the config for sensitive info before posting publicly

welcome to the forum,

as a test, try mounting to a folder.
rclone mount server01:data c:\mount -vv

fwiw, i do not use rclone's smb remote. instead, i use native OS commands.

check out my howto guide about rclone+smb
https://forum.rclone.org/t/how-to-access-smb-samba-with-rclone/42754

Hi @asdffdsa and thanks for your quick reply.

This worked as expected. The original command also mapped the drive, it just doesn't function as a local.

I followed the guide that you wrote but I think I'm missing something.

  1. net use x: \\server\share /user:"username" "password"
  2. rclone ls x:\
  3. net use /delete x:

1: Mapped the drive to the letter X.
2. Did a recursive list of the share.
3. Disconnected the mapping.

I'm not sure how that can make a mapped drive look local.

Appreciate the help.

ok, you need a local drive, named d:

rclone mount server01:data c:\mount -vv
subst d: c:\mount

Also, how can I tell if the drive will function as local? Will it show up in disk management? Is there some flag?

Backblaze in particular. I rebuilt my computer with linux and then realized Backblaze doesn't have a linux agent. So now I am trying to back it up with a Windows VM mapping to the same data that it was backing up before. But Backblaze shows the drive as "unpluigged".

image

ok, you need a local drive, named d: for backblaze client

try this

rclone mount server01:data c:\mount -vv
subst d: c:\mount

The first command executes as expected, but then I just have a flashing cursor and not an actual prompt where I can type.

If I CTRL-C to get my prompt back, the mapping disappears.

then open two terminals, one for each command

or something like

rclone mount server01:data c:\mount -vv --no-console
timeout /t 10
subst d: c:\mount

Ran it in two windows. Good call.

Both commands ran and worked, but BB still says the drive is unplugged. (FYI... I quit Backblaze from the taskbar and killed the running the processes. The relaunched it and still no luck

looks like backblaze software is designed backup only local hard drives, maybe you are looking for a way to circumvent that?

Yes. It's the same physical box, but running Linux now. I thought rclone could make the drive from the Windows VM tmapped to the Linux OS look local.
