I have all setup as per https://rclone.org/commands/rclone_mount/

I am using Version “v1.45-100-ga2341cc4-beta”

Tried with several combinations of cache value.

Using Mega remote.

rclone mount remote O: -vv --vfs-cache-mode minimal

Point is…
All seems to work, I am able to browse the folders and file names are shown.
If I try to rename a folder … seems that it tries to download the folder contents, then rename/upload… It is really slow…

It happens whatever combination of cache value…

It works that way or I am wrong? If wrong, how can go so slow, just for a folder rename?

It should work I think…

I tried it on linux and it did a server side directory move as expected.

How exactly did you rename the folder on Windows?

Can you try using “rename” in a cmd window to see if that does something different?

Renaming in CMD goes fast and smooth.

I was trying to rename in explorer, using right click etc.
It seems explorer has to download a lot, probably to show video lenght, thumb, etc. It needs to process all video files in a folder in order to be able to rename the folder. After it has procesed those, it renames fast. So, seems that explorer needs to download and cacht a lot of bytes… It is unusable if there are many big video files.
Tried Q-dir, no better than explorer.
Same with Double Commander, Free Commander, and others with graphic interphase that I tried…
Only CMD goes fast.

  • bad configuration?
  • hidden issue in rclone?

Really dont know… but hurts

Ah, thumbnails…

You can disable the making of thumbnails with something like this: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-thumbnail-previews-in-windows-vista-explorer/

Making the thumbnails is quite expensive as it has to do lots of downloading and seeking as you’ve noted.

Just disabling thumbnails does not solve the issue…
Explorer takes forever renaming large video files…

I really do not know. But I pasted the output of the debug on my first post. Perhaps trying to find out the time length of the file?
I did an experiment.
Mounted drive.
Using CMD changed a big video file from file.mp4 to file.mp4.txt
Opened mounted drive with Explorer. Renamed file.mp4.txt to file.mp4.txtanother. Fast, no issues.
So the issue is with explorer doing magic with media files…

By the way, should I be able to smoothly use rclone mount with windows explorer I would be able to ditch the obsolescent Rclone Browser …

I found another article about other ways to disable thumbnailing - I don’t know whether any of those will help.

I found a/the solution.

EASY alternative: use speedcommander or nightcommander instead of explorer.

Otherwise, “adjust” windows behaviour:

a) Icons no thumbnails
+
b) Handlers (requires touching the registry)

SETPS for Windows 10 (all but N version):
You will lose duration and date information in the explorer view:
