[Action Required] Changes to Google Photos backup functionality in Google Drive for desktop
Hi Tony,
We are writing to inform you that the option to back up photos and videos to Google Photos using Google Drive for desktop is being discontinued. To continue automatically backing up photos and videos from your computer, you can use “Back up folders” in Google Photos.
You are receiving this email because you have folders configured to back up to Google Photos via Google Drive for desktop.
June 15, 2026: You will no longer be able to add new folders to back up to Google Photos using the Google Drive for desktop interface. Existing folders will continue to sync until August 10th.
August 10, 2026: Google Drive for desktop will no longer support backing up photos and videos to Google Photos.
To continue backing up your photos and videos from your desktop folders, please set up “Back up folders” at photos.google.com. You can also install the Photos web app to back up your photos and videos in the background. Any photos or videos already backed up to Google Photos will remain safe in your library and will not be affected by this change. For more information on backing up your desktop folders, please visit our Help Center.
Thank you,
Google Photos Team
