What is the problem you are having with rclone?

mount of google drive shows size 0 as described in Google Drive reports file size -1 and an empty file when mounted or in the documentation. which makes the mount not usefull e.g. for rdiff-backup

I understand that all my problems are a consequence of the described inability, to get the filesize from google drive.
However, I do not unterstand the reason. Using googe drive api list, I can get the filesize (field size in v3 and fileSize in v2) I get all necessary info direclty from google. Why can't rclone do that? Could you fix this, or is the explanation in the documentation incomplet3e?

It is ancient. If you want help please use the latest rclone. Not one from many many years ago. Unless you do some ancient software study but then you are on your own:) Plus maybe few others with similar hobby.

because I was complaining about a documented malfunction, I was assuming, the ancient version from my mint distribution would be sufficient. I was wrong.
with the current version

  • the errors partial downloads are not supported disappeared

the documentation in limitations is imprecise/incomplete/missleading and I propose to update it:

  • affected are not only google docs but also google sheets (and probably other types in an internal google format) - the unknown filesize is only a symptom of a deeper problem
  • although mount reports those filetypes with the corresponding office-file-extension, they are of in the google internal format (this is a mount, not sync!)
  • if you double click such a file, your installed office(Writer, rsp. Word ...) tries to open it and fails - because it is not in office but in google format
  • only when you copy/paste the file it will be converted to the corresponding office-format and you can work locally with it
