Gdrive+Cache+Encrypt = Terrible Lag/Buffer with Plex

Hey everyone,

I'm back again with (most likely) some configuration issues. First the business end:

Remote(s) Configs

[gdrive]
type = drive
scope = drive
token =
client_secret =
client_id =

[cache]
type = cache
remote = gdrive:/secure
plex_url = http://192.168.1.119:32400
plex_username =
plex_password =
chunk_size = 64M
info_age = 2d
chunk_total_size = 32G

[crypt]
type = crypt
remote = cache:/crypt
filename_encryption = standard
directory_name_encryption = true
password =
password2 =

[crypt2]
type = crypt
remote = gdrive:/secure/crypt
filename_encryption = standard
directory_name_encryption = true
password =
password2 =

Rclone Mount Command:

rclone mount --allow-other --allow-non-empty --dir-cache-time=48h --cache-db-purge --buffer-size 1G --umask 002 --rc --log-level INFO --log-file /home/td001/logs/rclone.log crypt: ~/mnt/gdrive &

MergerFS Commands

mergerfs -o defaults,sync_read,auto_cache,use_ino,allow_other,func.getattr=newest,category.action=all,category.create=ff /home/td001/TorrentShare/SonarrDownloads/:/home/td001/mnt/gdrive/TV/ /home/td001/TorrentShare/merger-tv

mergerfs -o defaults,sync_read,auto_cache,use_ino,allow_other,func.getattr=newest,category.action=all,category.create=ff /home/td001/TorrentShare/RadarrDownloads/:/home/td001/mnt/gdrive/Movies/ /home/td001/TorrentShare/merger-movies

Plex is pointing to both merger mounts. Everything works as far as I can tell however I am getting brutal buffering issues. Here is an example of my rclone.log when I play any movies:

You can see that I've even flushed the cache in the hopes this would help (it didn't). Now every time I do get those buffers in Plex, when I look at the log I get those EOF errors so I'm sure they're related. Sometimes after a long wait, it continues... others it just dies and kicks you out of the movie. I have a 1gbit internet connection and I am using direct play. The Plex server is running on a Ubuntu VM in a docker container with 200gig HD space and 16GB of RAM along with other not taxing containers.

Hopefully someone who is better at these configs then I, might spot something I made a mistake on and everything will be fixed! One can only hope! Any help is much appreciated. :grin:

Have a few things in there that are conflicting as cache has it's own memory buffers so make:

--buffer-size 0M

allow-non-empty is bad as that allows over mounting. I really can't imagine a use case for it. I'd remove that.

You have info_age equal to dir-cache-time as you want dir-cache-time to be a little shorter than info_age.

That being said, your errors indicate someone cleaned/removed the cache-chunk area so it can't find the chunk it's expecting to so it retries to get the chunk.

Hey @Animosity022 - So I am totally up for changing anything to get this to work haha. I will change buffer-size to 0M again (had this before but figured I'd try some new things in an attempt to fix it).

I've seen you mention that you don't like allow-non-empty in other posts. When I try to get rid of it though, it won't let me mount gdrive because it says folders aren't empty (has my movie and tv folders). I will have a look at this also.

I will set dir-cache-time to 40hrs?

Also, it was me that ran killall -HUP. I did this to clear the cache and try new settings. The movies you see below are the errors I get after that. I also got these errors before clearing the cache as well. My assumption is that it's the reason I'm getting these buffers but I'm not sure.

OK changes have been implemented:

rclone mount --allow-other --dir-cache-time=36h --cache-db-purge --buffer-size=0M --umask 002 --rc --log-level INFO --log-file /home/td001/logs/rclone.log crypt: ~/mnt/gdrive &

I tried to run one movie after and here is the rclone.log with the same error message:

And after I tried to play it again... it worked for a little and then kicked me out and added these two lines to the log:

2019/06/11 17:51:19 ERROR : crypt/gu429mg4onhpaq5g5jm100419o/1apbp8rm7m1jarpv5h7tbat8ta318s159nhu70a1u5u7o3fe1o8g/n7j6rcc63gu2v6n6ectu6id6kue8vgcpfpfptba27t6bctbfh32161gqi4lhf13nkvln7fn0dekq6: (67108864/8218062764) error (chunk not found 67108864) response

And from here, the same two lines are repeated with different time stamps every time it buffers.

If you have non empty, that means that when you mount something, it overmounts and hides what is underneath it. It's not a good thing.

Example would be if you have /gmedia/somefile.mkv

and you mount over /gmeda, you basically lose that file and can't see it again as it 'overmounts' it. The mount point should be free of files or other directories. It got that way because a process wrote something there before it was mounted so that's not a good thing.

I'd delete that folder and the cache.db and start it up fresh as something is out of sync if you can't find chunks.

So I deleted the db and the folder. It still buffers, but it comes back much quicker now though still showing those same error messages.

chunk not found means it's not keeping it on disk if that's still the error. disk full or something?

It's weird because those errors are still happening, but I am able to watch an episode of a show with minimal to no buffering now. I'm going to try a movie next - that's usually where it craps out.

Ahh - I spoke to soon. We're back to buffering again. Disk is not full, only 8% used.

Not sure if this matters, but it also takes a really long time for the initial start of anything... 10min at least.

I'd bet as it has to retry everything. You could perhaps run it in debug and see if anything else jumps out.

This is probably going to be a stupid question but... should my mergerfs mounts point to the remote instead of the mount point? For example, in my rclone mount command I have "crypt: ~/mnt/gdrive &" but the mergerfs has the actual mount point "/home/td001/mnt/gdrive/Movies/"

I'm not sure what you are using mergerfs for. It normally combines multiple mount points.

What = /data/local:/GD
Where = /gmedia

I take the what and mount is combined as the where.

Oh I am using it for the same reason as you are. Mainly for Sonarr/Radarr to keep track of file, have it available for use before it gets uploaded. I am just trying to think of ways I may have screwed something up is all.

What version of mergerfs ?

mergerfs -V

is the command to check.

mergerfs version: 2.21.0
FUSE library version: 2.9.7
fusermount version: 2.9.7
using FUSE kernel interface version 7.19

That's a super old version so I'm not sure as that's from June 2017.

What's the best way to get a newer version installed? Add the repository or just download the tarball from Git?

Depending on your OS, you can download from the mergerfs github and install the latest one. I build from source myself.

OK now updated to latest and greatest:

mergerfs version: 2.28.1
FUSE library version: 2.9.7-mergerfs_2.28.0
fusermount version: 2.9.7
using FUSE kernel interface version 7.29

Gave it another shot but sadly same thing:

I should note though that despite the error messages, if I wait like 4 or 5 min the buffering ends and it continues to play. I mention this because the errors seem to indicate "missing chunks" but oddly movie doesn't skip or anything.

Something else to mention - hoping this might help... it appears that plex is scanning some new files and I've noticed some additional new error messages in the rclone.log:
