Can't get past rclone config - cannot create custom remote

I am Following the instructions in the readme.md at Proton Drive

Choose a number from below, or type in your own value
[snip]
XX / Proton Drive
   \ "protondrive"
[snip]

What is the problem you are having with rclone?

Doesn’t accept anything I type. Maybe I am not getting the exact syntax? Is there not just a config file I can edit with vi directly? Seems like a snag with the interactive prompt

Run the command 'rclone version' and share the full output of the command.

$ rclone version
rclone v1.53.3-DEV
- os/arch: linux/amd64
- go version: go1.18.1
Paste command here

Which cloud storage system are you using? (eg Google Drive)

Proton Drive

The command you were trying to run (eg rclone copy /tmp remote:tmp)

rclone config

Please run 'rclone config redacted' and share the full output. If you get command not found, please make sure to update rclone.

This doesn’t work because you require a remote to be created. I can’t even create the remote.

A log from the command that you were trying to run with the -vv flag

No logs available from the rclone config interactive

welcome to the forum,

that is a five year old, custom compiled development version of rclone, from an out of date repository.

  1. uninstall that version
  2. https://rclone.org/install/#script-installation

protondrive was added at v1.64.0. current version of rclone is v1.72.1
