Can rclone union hide files without deleting them?

What is the problem you are having with rclone?

I don't have a problem, I have a question for understanding about Union.

Run the command 'rclone version' and share the full output of the command.

rclone v1.66.0

  • os/version: slackware 15.0+ (64 bit)
  • os/kernel: 6.1.79-Unraid (x86_64)
  • os/type: linux
  • os/arch: amd64
  • go/version: go1.22.1
  • go/linking: static
  • go/tags: none

Which cloud storage system are you using? (eg Google Drive)

no cloud storage

My Question

I want to connect mnt/local and remote: to /mnt/merge. New files written to /mnt/merge should be stored in local. Files in local should also be deletable via /mnt/merge. Files located under remote: should become "invisible" under /mnt/merge and not be deleted in remote: . Is that possible?

remote: is an SFTP connection.

I solved this with unionfs years ago, but I couldn't find a way to install it on Unraid. While searching on Google, I then stumbled upon rclone union.

Your description means that you do not need remote at all... As you say you do not want to see it nor modify. Using only mnt/local fulfils your requirement.
