What is rclone checking during a purge?

Ideally, the stats would hint at the possible tuning parameters to speed up the command. So at the high level there would a block of things performed by the --checkers with the heading “Checking:” and a block of things performed by the --transfers with the heading “Transferring:”. Each would then have up to 8/4 ongoing items/lines with default settings.

I agree with that.

The text after each item (file name) would then hint at the ongoing activity using the terminology used in the corresponding tuning flags and information whether the activity is happening on source or destination. So e.g. hashing could be called “checksumming, destination” hinting at --ignore-checksum.

That sounds possible.

Having looked into the code, I don’t think this is easily achieved

I'm not sure about that - it may be possible. Will have a quick go.

it would probably also break/change the rc API interface to read stats.

I think we can arrange so it doesn't break that API quite easily.

This changes the "checking" into one of

• checking
• deleting
• hashing
• importing
• listing
• merging
• moving
• renaming

Most of these things only happen in unusual corner cases - the most visible one will be "deleting"
