After I realized that I had rclone running as a user service, I am not sure how much of my GOGC testing so far is actually valid. I launched that command (export...) manually so it was probably running for some time, but as soon as it failed, the user service would probably have taken over - without the GOGC setting.
So I disabled the user service for now so that it won't interfere with the commands I'm trying.
