Using rclone cat it is doing a directory listing.

This seems pretty inefficient.

It looks like its doing this because we can 'cat' a directory (which is interesting). Not sure why we'd do that. but okay.

Or like this to output any file in dir or its subdirectories.
rclone cat remote:path/to/dir
Or like this to output any .txt files in dir or its subdirectories.
rclone --include "*.txt" cat remote:path/to/dir

It doesn't hurt anything but it seems to slow it down considerably.

rclone cat uses the same directory traversal as rclone ls etc so you'll see the same thing there.

I think what you are asking for is an optimization for the rclone cat FILE case.

What happens at the moment is that if rclone detects a file as the source argument, then it puts the equivalent of --files-from FILENAME and uses the parent directory instead.

This works well for things that need a directory (like md5sum) but not very well for things like cat...

In source code terms, anything that calls cmd.NewFsSrc will work like this this includes: about, cachestats, cat, check, cleanup, config, copy, copyto, cryptcheck, dbhashsum, dedupe, delete, hashsum, ls, lsd, lsf, lsjson, lsl, md5sum, memtest, move, moveto, ncdu, serve, settier, sha1sum, size, sync, tree

If this could use a different mechanism for listing rather than the --files-from trick then it would fix all of these at once. For example making a wrapping Fs which only lists one file. That would work and is how rclone used to work but I had to remove it as wrapping with extras became troublesome. However that problem is now solved with the Features.

I think that might be worth doing and shouldn't be too difficult.

Can you please make a new issue on github about this and I'll explore further.
