Thanks for the pointers. I investigated pandoc and the standard Markdown and it seems to be possible:

Whether it's worth or not I'm not sure, but I know this is just the thing to tickle my OCD 
-) so I'm going ahead and doing some tests.
If everything goes right, I hope to be sending you a PR soon
