pCloud support replied and confirmed:

"Hello,
Thanks for your e-mail.
The European servers can not return MD5 because it's not supported. They are using only SHA1 and SHA256.

I replied asking them to update the documentation.
Anyway please consider whether with the confirmation, this should be integrated in the official rclone branch. And once again thank you for following this up.

Thanks for confirming that with pCloud support.

I've merged this to master now which means it will be in the latest beta in 15-30 mins and released in v1.54

Note I haven't added SHA256 support yet because rclone doesn't have a hasher for it at the moment. It would be easy to add, but if no other storage systems support it, it probably isn't worth doing right now.
