New feature: CACHE

@ncw is it now possible to download torrents or other files directly to cloud with rclone and cache?
should cache-writes be enabled for that ?

If you use --cache-mode then yes in theory… Try minimal and if that doesn’t work try writes.

Note that is fairly new code so any bug reports greatly appreciated!

Hey all. Sorry for the short time away, worked on a bit of features that came mostly as feedback from most of you through issues.

Here’s the latest beta that has significant changes in cache:
https://beta.rclone.org/v1.38-217-gb48b5373/

Some key points here:

  • there’s now a Plex integration and warm up is gone. It wasn’t really working that well for that use case and by integrating cache with Plex, it will be able to handle scans much more efficient while providing playback times a smooth transition (what warm up tried to do by guessing really)
  • chunks are no longer expiring based on time. You will need to only give it a max cache size and it will clear the oldest chunks
  • all these meant a lot of removing stuff that might have bottlenecked and degraded performance. There was also a nasty bug that caused a lot of read errors which meant degraded performance too. Overall, the latest beta should give out a better experience
  • 403s should not be encountered anymore either. If you still do, let me know please through an issue. Would be glad to help you out. I just reran a scan of my entire library and playing at the same time and I got no 403. I hope everyone else can have a similar experience

I really recommend to run rclone config and point rclone at your Plex installation if you’re using it for that. I’m also feeling the need to slow down Plex’s scan and with this integration I should be able to in the future.

The doc was also updated: https://github.com/ncw/rclone/blob/master/docs/content/cache.md

And if you have improvement ideas or suggestions, I will gladly work with you to see if it’s possible.

These are great news!!

I just started testing this with the latest beta and I’ve been running some benchmarks (too early to publish as there’s nothing scientific yet but it seems to be outperforming PlexDrive significantly).

Two issues: I have files “disappearing” from my directory. Not on the actual Google Drive itself but I’ll “ls” a directory from my cached-Google mount and see maybe 10 files and 1 sub directory. I can read/copy the files no problem. Don’t do anything but wait 30 minutes and come back and the directory is empty except for the sub. Killing the mount and starting it up again with the dump cache option brings everything back from the dead. However, it does mean that a full scan of a new Plex server, for example never completes because files keep disappearing.

In the logs, I’m seeing this (not sure if related):

panic: runtime error: slice bounds out of range

Sounds like the same behaviour I already mentioned in this thread: New rclone cache feature - files randomly disappear

Yep, for the panic issue I already added a commit to catch it. I can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from. Simple math there that shouldn’t ever let that happen. Furthermore, I have never really seen this happening before during my scans and that type of issue should happen more frequent.

Anyway, the commit catches the panic, errors out the read cause I don’t understand when it happens and what should be that read about but I have added all the details I need to find out in the error log: unexpected conditions during reading. current position: ... I will need those errors in that issue @Shacuih and @kelinger . They would really help me out.

https://beta.rclone.org/v1.38-223-g7c972d37/

@kelinger can you post your config to see if I can figure out the disappearance issue? And just to confirm: cache is reading, 30 mins later, some directory is now empty on the mount but not on drive?

Thanks

@remus.bunduc is “SIGHUP” supported by your CACHE to flush all directory caches? like it was before with the mount command (https://github.com/ncw/rclone/pull/1376)

@remus.bunduc are plex username and plex password the credentials used for plex.tv or the local system user running the plex-processes?

ok so I got a logfile where I can’t see anything special, but half of the movies disappeared from the plex library again. The log is big, so I don’t want to put it into this thread. On the local mount the files of the disappeared movies are gone, only the folders and subfolders remain.

rclone: Version “v1.38-223-g7c972d37β” starting with parameters ["/usr/local/bin/rclone-beta" “mount” “-vv” “plexdrive:/” “/mnt/.plexd” “–allow-other” “–config=/home/dellinger/.config/rclone/rclone.conf”]
but no entries in the logfile like “unexpected conditions during reading. current position…”

@remus.bunduc - Thanks for your reply and investigation. This is my Rclone config (sanitized):

[Google]
type = drive
client_id =
client_secret =
token = {"access_token":"ya------------Yk","token_type":"Bearer","refresh_token":"1/xxxxxxxx","expiry":"2017-12-10T07:25:03.56635514-07:00"}

[GoogleCache]
type = cache
remote = Google:
chunk_size = 5M
info_age = 5m
chunk_age = 3h
warmup_age = 24h
plex_url = http://127.0.0.1:32400
plex_username = Ken@-----.com
plex_password = DSa-----------V
plex_token = ------------

And, I’m starting Rclone-mount via:

/usr/sbin/rclone mount \
        --allow-other \
        --log-file /home/kelinger/logs/rclone.log \
        --config /home/kelinger/.config/rclone/rclone.conf \
        --log-level INFO \
        --cache-db-purge \
        GoogleCache:/ /home/kelinger/rclone

Also, if it helps, during the scan itself, I see some errors like below. However, even if I’m not even running Plex, I still have files disappearing after some short time so this may not be a true indicator:

2017/12/10 11:22:58 ERROR : /Plex/TV Shows/Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency/Season 02/Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - S02E09 - Trouble is Bad.mkv: unexpected conditions during reading. current position: 2222018560, current chunk position: 2217738240, current chunk size: 2314240, offset: 4280320, chunk size: 5242880, file size: 2222087230

Got some Errors now too, but I guess this has nothing to do with the disappearing files, cause half of my 120 movies in the library are gone again.

Yes, mine are still disappearing with the latest beta as well. However, I’m actually nearly complete doing my TV Show scan so I’m able to get a lot further.

I don’t think the panic is related to the the files going away from cache.
The previous beta seems to confirm that the panic is gone though it does show that some few kb get lost from the end of the file for reasons unknown yet. I’m experimenting a fix for it. More details here and the latest beta with the experimental fix: https://github.com/ncw/rclone/issues/1896

@seuffert SIGHUP should be easy to add. I have a lot on my plate right now, would you be so kind to open a feature request so I won’t forget about it?

@Shacuih plex username and password are the ones you login on plex.tv.

I’m going to start looking in the disappearances. I could use a bit of details:

  • don’t they appear on a ls or any other activity of the sort?
  • what OS does this happen on?
  • is it consistent with the cache-info-age? As in: do they go away from cache after that time?

@remus.bunduc - does this help?

I’m using Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.4.0-103-generic x86_64) with the latest updates and rclone v1.38-224-g829dd1adβ. Here are the results of multiple LS commands (identical results have been eliminated to minimize the size of this message but I checked every 3-4 minutes). At first, while I’m copying a file, the rest of the files disappeared. Then, 5-10 minutes later, the file I was copying also disappeared:

At 14:45 CET I moved a new movie onto the drive (with rclone move, not cache) and it’s not listed yet at 15:22 CET, 2 more files are gone instead, the stats are now [206 directories, 940 files]

It must indeed have something to do with File Age.

I’ve set it to 15min for my most recent test and the files disappeared about 15min after mounting.

I’m still trying to get to the cause or at least replicate this issue but I don’t have any success. I did the exact same steps described here.
The deletion logs don’t mean the files are deleted but just that their info is evicted from cache and at the next list or search of an object it will be read from the cloud provider, not from cache.

Are you all mapping drive -> cache -> crypt? Do you use any other tools in between or outside of these mounts that could interfere?

@Shacuih @kelinger

I have the same problem with encryption but for simplicity, I’m only using unencrypted right now. I’m not using anything else like UnionFS, etc.

this doesn’t happen without crypt (files disappearing)? @kelinger
