How to cache only metadata on Cache remote?

Files or file metadata? Assuming file data you could probably do it with something like rclone cat --max-size 2MB /path/to/mount --discard which would freshen all the metadata and fetch all the 2MB or less files.

I meant primarily files. Refreshing metadata is easily enough done via the remote.
Currently it seems like rclone lists up the cache contents at start and then tracks it from there - so simply copying files into the cache while it is live seems to cause some cache confusion. (but I have not studied this in much detail, so tell me if this is suposed to work already).
The idea is just that the VFS cache can get to register the files if we dump stuff into it
