Google Drive and Google Photos users - ACTION REQUIRED

Hi all,

just been able to fully pass branding requirements using a 1.111B domain. Will soon write a how to and publish. It is not difficult but guides are not easy, so I will do a dummies guide. So, I got full clean production status without need to validate the client, so no any warning on the GCC. As the client remains not-validated, the warning still appears at the time of authorization.

Domains type 1.111B cost less than a dollar a year, so it is a really affordable approach - while doing all that takes some time and sucks...

It is a pity that the logo cannot be added... will miss the three circles logo ... I am very sad that rclone will lose lots of drive users and visibility ... unless Google reconsiders its new branding requirements in cases such as rclone.

Hi all,

I just discovered that it is not a requirement to put in any real information into the branding section.

I used example.com for everything it published.

I was able to use my client ID and secret with three different Google Drive accounts.

In my case, branding warning triangle stayed there. I could put whatever i wished on the branding and it was not checked on the spot, but to get full clear branding it was checked that the clientID was stated in the branding url ... see for example a usser having probles with that https://security.googlecloudcommunity.com/security-validation-5/oauth-branding-verification-keeps-failing-though-home-page-html-has-app-name-description-confirmed-in-search-console-7990

Google documentation (where valid or not thats another story) says

(Submit for brand verification  |  Brand Verification for Google Authentication APIs  |  Google for Developers)

"If you verify brand information of your app, you can increase the likelihood that a user recognizes your brand and decides to grant access to your app. Verified brand information can also lead to fewer revocations later on when a user or Google Workspace administrator reviews third-party apps and services with access to the account. The automated brand verification process typically takes a few minutes after you click the Verify Branding button. In some cases, where a result cannot be automatically determined, your app may undergo a manual review process that usually takes 2-3 business days."

So, you might be lucky in creation but got out later on. At least with a domain it is clear that requirements are fully fulfilled, warnings go away, and seems that it might not be revoked or requested for validation submision ... Your confort/mileage might be different that mine, I wish to have a client with full greens on ... and USD$1 was not much money ... (besides the PAI)

On the other hand, as Nick said, OAuth is not stable ... see

Well my ID is published but not verified.

When I use Rclone to update my Google Drive configuration and add the client ID and secret, and then it opens the web page to authenticate with Google, it does warn me that it hasn't been verified and gives me the option to continue. I continue and it says "Success." I have a valid token, client ID, and secret that is working across all of my google drive accounts right now.

You are probably correct in that Google may choose to take a look at it and fail it at some point down the road.

The issue for everybody is that it is extremely difficult and expensive to ask everybody around the world to register a domain and host a website as well. That costs more than $1 a year or $1 a month.

There are other products out there that can mount a Google Drive that don't have even the option to do a client ID and Secret.

The issue is I don't know any one of them that is multi-platform and works on Linux. Rclone is the only one I know that works on Linux.

I tried to use a website that I'm allowed to create using my PCloud account but I don't own the domain. As you mentioned, you need to own the domain in order for it to work.

That's why the GitHub option is kind of out of the equation.

If you know somebody that needs something like Rclone and they have Linux or Mac and they have no options that they can think of, it is difficult to say, "Oh by the way, you can use Rclone, but you have to buy your own domain, set up a website, and populate a home page and two policy pages."

This whole predicament sucks.

Long time since last visiting the rclone forum -- this one showed right on top of my main screen.

Looks like Google keeps getting out of their way to be more and more like Apple and try to wall users inside their own things by making it more and more difficult for us enthusiasts to do things our way :expressionless:
