No worries! Happy to add it to the list of unsolved mysteries 
I suspect some kind of broken file system problem due to the specific interaction rclone does with the NAS but it doesn't seem to happen very often so lets cross fingers!

I suppose the more modern NAS would help to solve the problem. Mine is ab. 10 y.o.
